The Dendera Zodiac Papyrus + Audio Story

Look up at the ancient Egyptian sky.

More than two thousand years ago, Egyptian priests looked to the heavens to understand time, the seasons, the movements of the stars, and the mysteries of the cosmos. At the Temple of Hathor in Dendera, this vision of the sky was carved into stone in what became known as the Dendera Zodiac.

Its remarkable circular design brings together the twelve zodiac constellations, thirty-six decans, and the five planets known in antiquity, blending Egyptian mythology with the astronomical traditions of the ancient Mediterranean world. It even records two remarkable celestial events: a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse.

Among its fascinating details is the Egyptian representation of Aquarius as Hapi, the god associated with the Nile and its life-giving waters—bringing together the heavens, the Nile, and the rhythm of life in ancient Egypt.

Today, the original Dendera Zodiac is preserved at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, while the Temple of Hathor at Dendera remains one of Egypt's most extraordinary ancient temples.
